The Communications Decency Act of 1996 was the first attempt made to censor content on the Internet. It was signed into law on February 8, 1996 by President Bill Clinton, and with it the CDA imposed criminal sanctions on anyone who "uses an interactive computer service to send to a specific person or persons under 18 years of age" or "uses any interactive computer service to display in a manner available to a person under 18 years of age" any pornographic content. Soon, challenges that it was too broad in definition were voiced. The Supreme Court affirmed the legal challenges in opposition to it.
Protests[]
In early 1996, a protest was staged online in opposition to the bill.[1] Senator Ron Wyden supported the protest, who also is at the forefront of legislative opposition to SOPA and PIPA.
