The Copyright Term Extension Act of 1998 extended the copyright of an author's work from the older Copyright Act of 1976. Formerly, copyright lasted for the author's life and plus 50 or 75 years. The extension act added an additional 20 years to the standard 50, and extended the copyright of corporate authorship from 75 years to 120 years, or 95 years after the publication date, whichever came first. The purpose of the act was to freeze works advancement to public domain in the United States. [1]
