The Democratic Party is one of the two major political parties in the United States, the other being the Republican Party, and is one of the oldest political parties in the world. The party represents American liberalism and progressivism and sits on the center-left of the American political spectrum. Democrats traditionally emphasize the role of government in alleviating problems in society and economics.

As of 2012, the Democratic Party makes up the majority of the United States Senate, a minority in the United States House of Representatives, and holds a minority of state governorships and legislatures. Democratic Presidents of the United States have included Franklin D. Roosevelt, Bill Clinton, and, currently, Barack Obama.

Democratic members of the House of Representatives make up sixteen of the thirty-one co-sponsors of the Stop Online Piracy Act, and twenty-three of the forty co-sponsors of the Protect IP Act in the Senate. Senator Patrick Leahy, a Democrat from Vermont and Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, introduced PIPA into the Senate.
